It's hard to talk about the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers without first mentioning the 1975 team who lost in the regional semifinal to Kentucky without star player Scott May who sat out with a broken list. That was the only loss for the '75 team and one that fueled the '76 teams pursuit of perfection the following year.
This time with healthy Scott May, Quinn Buckner, Tom Abernathy, Kent Benson and Bobby Wilkerson the Hoosiers marched through the regular season undefeated. Indiana started the season as the #1 ranked team in the country and they would go wire to wire remaining #1 throughout the entire season.
Bob Knight's Hoosiers beat St. John's, Alabama, and Marquette to reach the Final Four for the first time since 1973. After beating UCLA for a second time that season the only thing standing in the way of perfection was in conference rival, Michigan.
After playing IU tough in the first half the Wolverines couldn't keep up and Indiana won comfortably, 86-68 to claim its 3rd National Championship.
"We were special because of one man, Bob Knight. I think for all of us, the biggest part of that was to see the smile on Coach Knight's face." -Quinn Buckner
